Note: This is not medical advice.  I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV.  Always consult with a medical professional before beginning any diet or exercise program.

Garcinia cambogia is a fruit.  I’ve heard the fruit tastes good.  Feel completely free to eat it if you would like.  It becomes a scam when people attempt to market it to people as a weight loss supplement.  We are going to play a game called what does the literature say.

Garcinia cambogia (Hydroxycitric Acid) as a Potential Antiobesity Agent A Randomized Controlled Trial

Garcinia cambogia failed to produce significant weight loss and fat mass loss beyond that observed with placebo (1596).”

Well that seems pretty cut and dry.  This study shows that for people on a calorie restricted diet who are moderately overweight, garcinia cambogia will not assist in weight loss.

Now you must be thinking there must be some reason that people seem to think this can be useful in weight loss.  Why you are right! There is!

High dose of Garcinia cambogia is effective in suppressing fat accumulation in developing male Zucker obese rats, but highly toxic to the testis(Paywalled, ScienceDirect)

This one shows that if you are an obese rat it is effective at preventing fat gain, but will damage your testes.  I know many of my readers without testes are probably not that worried, but realize if it’s toxic to the testes, it is likely toxic to a lesser degree to other systems also.

Now I know what you guys are thinking.  I’ve only showed you one study that shows it doesn’t help with weight loss.  Well…

Does Glycine max leaves or Garcinia Cambogia promote weight-loss or lower plasma cholesterol in overweight individuals: a randomized control trial

“EGML and GCE supplementation failed to promote weight-loss or any clinically significant change in % body fat”

This is really starting to look like maybe it just doesn’t work.  Which quite simply is because there is no evidence I can find that it does work.  This is not worth the money.

A note on blogs that push supplements like this: Many sites including this one make a significant portion of our income from what are called affiliate links.  I even included one below this (it does not lead to garcinia cambogia).  The kinds of sites that push this are often littered with links like this, and they always heap praise on unproven supplements because if they can get you to purchase they make a small percentage of the sales.  I refuse to ever push anything without scientific backing on you guys.  I see it as cheapening the health and nutrition space.  So if you would like to support my site, please click the link below.  Like and share this site in as many places as you can, and always try to find the scientific truth behind things in your life.
